THE STORY OF THOMAS & FRIENDS

Our story begins in 1917 in the sleepy village of Box in Wiltshire, England. A young boy lies awake in his bed, listening to steam engines huffing and puffing along the nearby Great Western Railway. To the little boy tucked up in bed, listening to the engines, it sounds very much like the trains are talking to each other. The young boy is Wilbert Awdry – later to become the Reverend W. Awdry, the creator of "The Railway Series" and the most famous tank engine in the world — Thomas.

Thomas engine №1

THE TANK ENGINE Thomas is the No. 1 blue engine. He is a cheeky little engine who often gets into scrapes, usually by being over-eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. But clouds never last long in Thomas’ world and soon he’s bustling about again, playing his part in the yard and on his very own branch line. Thomas works hard and he always strives to be a “Really Useful Engine.” Fun Fact! Thomas is based on the London Brighton and South Coast Railway 0-6-0 E2 with extended side tanks.

James engine №5

James is the No. 5 red engine. He is a medium-sized engine whose six driving wheels are not as big as Gordon’s but not as small as Thomas’. He has a fine scarlet coat and brass dome and thinks of himself as a “Really Splendid Engine.” Occasionally this leads to misguided ideas about the sort of work suitable for such a distinguished engine, invariably landing James in trouble.

PERCY engine №6

Percy is the No. 6 green engine and the junior member of Sir Topham Hatt’s railway. He is quite content puffing around the yard with no particular desire for adventure in the world outside. Percy is Thomas’ best friend and his favorite job is delivering the mail. He is always happy to help and other engines sometimes take advantage of his good nature.

GORDON engine №4

Gordon is the No. 4 blue engine who pulls the express. As the senior member of the engine family, he is the fastest and most powerful of Sir Topham Hatt’s team – and he knows it. He’s goodhearted, always willing to forgive, and uses his superior strength to help smaller engines out of trouble.

MINIS

In 2015, Mattel released a brand new Thomas and Friends toy range called MINIS, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Thomas & Friends. The range features numerous characters in a variety of different themes. They are small models, each acquiring a 4-wheeled chassis configuration and a hook and loop coupling system. The tender engines have their tenders moulded onto the overall unit, behind their cabs and boilers. The MINIS in 2015 included the themes: Classics, Metallic, Chillin', Heroes, Robo, Spooky, Racers, Dino, Old School, Neon, DC Super Friends™, Christmas and Warrior, the latter two being exclusive-only themes
